Spring

Edouard Manet

1876

"Spring" is a 1881 oil-on-canvas painting by Édouard Manet. It depicts Parisian actress Jeanne DeMarsy in a floral dress with parasol and bonnet against a background of lush foliage and blue sky.

Jeanne is presented not as a muse or symbol, but as a contemporary individual. Sylish, recognisable, and of her time.

Through this piece, art met mass reproduction, as it was one of the first artworks to be published in colour collapsing the boundary between elite art and popular media.
