Le Boulevard de Montmartre, Matinée de Printemp

Camille Pissarro

c. 1896-1897

Boulevard Montmartre, Mardi Gras (1897) by Camille Pissarro depicts the Carnaval de Paris unfolding along one of the city's newly modern boulevards.

Painted from an elevated vantage point, the scene dissolves individual figures into moving currents of colour and rhythm. Rather than isolating a single event or subject, Pissarro presents the city itself as the protagonist. A living system shaped by crowd movement, circulation, and spectacle.

The painting reflects a modern awareness of urban life as something collective, dynamic, and continuously in motion.
