Cafe Terrace at Night

Vincent van Gogh

1888

This is one of Van Gogh's first night scenes painted directly from life, not from memory or imagination.

Van Gogh does not arrange the scene according to exact lines, distances, or proportions. Instead, he uses colour and light to guide where the viewer looks, mirroring how the human mind actually experiences a moment rather than how it can be measured.

The carefully placed stars allow historians to estimate the moment of its creation to early September 1888, around 11 p.m.
